This novel takes place during a time of heavy puritan beliefs in the New England area, where this novel is placed. One of the main things that sticks out while researching about puritan beliefs of this time is that they believed in the simplicity of things, the scarlet letter goes directly against that belief, because it is always talked about being finely stitched and extravagant. Obviously as well as can be assumed was that the puritans saw sex outside of marriage as a very bad sin, this would justify the extremity of Hester’s punishment. Many things in the puritan community seem like things are made to be very strict in religion and it might be seen that this novel was a form of mocking the puritan community as a whole.
