Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804. His father was also named Nathaniel, however his last name was Hathorne, no “w”, this change from father to son was due to the fact that John Hathorne being a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. Apparently Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter did not approve of this and felt he had to rid himself of the name. Nathaniel Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College in Maine during the years of 1821 – 1824. During this time he befriended Franklin Pierce, who would later become a United States president and would help with a start in politics for Hawthorne. Hawthorne worked at the Boston Custom House for a period before he lost his job due to a change in administration. At the beginning of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne describes finding papers that talk of Hester Pyrnne’s case, however there is no factual evidence to support that and is seen to be a literary device. In 1842, he married Sophia Peabody, they moved to The Wayside in Concord, Massachusetts, where they were neighbors to Ralph Waldo Emerson, and David Thoreau. Nathaniel Hawthorne died while sleeping on May 19, 1864 and is now buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord. He had three children, Una, Julian, and Rose. His best known stories were written during the time period of 1850 – 1860, in this time frame he wrote four major stories, they were The Scarlet Letter, The House of Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun.
